Some Centers Experiencing Longer Wait Times. Online Services Available As Alternative

We are currently experiencing longer wait times at some Driver License Centers due to increased demand for REAL ID services. This may result in extended periods before you can enter our facilities.

With much of the Commonwealth under a high heat advisory, we strongly encourage customers to avoid waiting in line whenever possible. If you are applying for a REAL ID and already have another acceptable document, such as a valid U.S. Passport, please consider postponing your visit and applying at a later date.

For customers seeking other common services, we recommend using our convenient online services, available on our website. This will help you avoid unnecessary wait times and stay safe during the heat advisory.

Suspicious Text Messages

PennDOT wants to alert the public about a new texting scam involving REAL ID. Fraudulent text messages are being sent to customers claiming to be from the DMV or the federal Department of Homeland Security asking people to click on a link and provide personal and payment information.

PennDOT does not have a process by which customers can pre-scan and upload REAL ID documents from a home or mobile device. PennDOT will never ask for nor accept any identity documents over the internet, via text message nor email for any reason. Any communications through text, internet or email requesting these documents are not affiliated with PennDOT and could be used for fraudulent purposes. As such, customers should not submit any images of personal documents to such requests.

Online Services

Some customers may experience difficulties when attempting to log in to our online services. Customers may be required to attempt logging in to the system more than once to gain access. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Road User Charge

As a result of a recent law change, PennDOT started collecting a Road User Charge fee for electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) vehicles on April 1, 2025. EV and PHEV owners will receive a notice by mail and must submit a check or money order to pay the fee within 30 days of the notice.

PennDOT Driver and Vehicle Services administers the state's 12.1 million vehicle registrations and 10.1 million driver's licenses and IDs. It also oversees programs such as REAL ID, motorcycle safety, and vehicle emission inspections.

New license plates are here!

Pennsylvania is the birthplace of American democracy — and with all eyes on our Commonwealth as we prepare to host our country’s 250th birthday in 2026, our new license plates celebrate the best of what the Commonwealth has to offer. We can’t wait to see your plates on the road! 

Plates are available for standard vehicles and trucks, including personalized plates. If you have a specialty plate (military, special fund, or organization plate), switching to the new plate will replace it with a standard plate. 

You can also take this opportunity to request a new personalized plate. All personalized plates will be made in the new Liberty Bell style.
